John Readhead's Shipyard

Royal Visit, April 16th 1920, Cont'd.

On the way round the shipyard - keenly interested

His Royal Highness showed great interest in the actual operation of a large Bulb Angle Frame Bar being drawn out of the Furnaces, and bent to the required shape, also in the powerful new electrically driven lathes and planing machines in the Engine Works, and the Electric Equipment Station which he closely inspected and asked several questions regarding same. At the fitting out quay was seen a large cargo steamer just finished and capable of carrying 8,000 tons d.w.

All the Shipbuilding berths were seen fully occupied and the interesting fact was made known to His Highness that on the West Berth was No. 464 Ship, the 80th Steamer ordered by the Hain Steamship Co., Ltd. (of which Company Lord Inchcape is the head) from the firm of John Readhead & Sons, Ltd.
