A Record of the BAGE Family History

Help wanted

Ed; I have received the following request for information from a researcher in Australia.

I am researching the life and family of Anna Newsom Bage nee Godwin
(1820-1891) wife of Edward Bage (Born Shrewsbury 1818, died Melbourne 1890).
I propose to write a biography of Anna.  She and Edward married in Sierra
Leone in 1850, later returned to England, and before leaving for Australia
in 1853 had daguerreotypes taken.  Until 1891 there is evidence that they
kept in touch with members of Edward's family, especially Mrs Whyte (nee
Lydia Bage, believed to be sister of Edward) Harriet Bage, Mary Bage, and
William Bage (Edward's brother)  Another sister became Mrs Evans.  I am
eager to find if any of this correspondence, photographs, or memoirs of the
Australian family and contacts with them remain today.

If anyone can help please get in touch with me at

jbne17514@blueyonder.co.uk

and I will pass on the information.

The Australian Connection

There are two groups of people that I am aware of, up to now, who originated in the U.K. and who established themselves in Australia, and they are set-out below;-

The first group consists of ;-

Edward and Anna Bage (nee Godwin), their sons William, Charles, Robert Terry, and Edward and his wife Mary Charlotte Bage (nee Lange)

For more information on this family follow these links ..... Edward (1817 - 1890) & Anna Bage (1820 - 1891)

Charles Bage, son of Edward and Anna had two daughters, Jessie Eleanor and Alice Newsom Bage.

Alice Newsom Bage - 1893-1957
Alice (MA Univ Melb) married and had 4 children.

For more information on this family follow these links ..... Charles Bage (1859 - 1930)

                                                                                     Jessie Eleanor Bage (c1885 - ?)

Edward and Mary's children were Anna Frederika (Freda) Bage, Ethel Mary Bage, Edward (Ted) Frederick Robert Bage; and Charles Bage.

For more information on this family follow these links ..... Edward (c1850 - ?) & Mary Charlotte Bage (c1850 - ?)

                                          Anna Frederika Bage (1883 - 1970)

                                    Ethel Mary Bage (c1885 - 1975)

                                                        Edward Frederick Robert Bage (1888 - 1915)

Fortunately there is a diary in existence, written by Mary Charlotte Bage in 1889, about her travels to New Zealand, and then on to Rio de Janeiro, then to England, Scotland and Wales then to Europe, with her husband Edward and their children Freda, Ethel and baby Ted. In it, on page 25, dated June 1889, there is a mention of Edward's father and a reference to Sierra Leone;-

..............making us think of your story of the wheelbarrows at Sierra Leone.

This makes me believe that his father is the Edward Bage mentioned in the letter to the Duchess of Bedford. (see Chapter 21).

The second group consists of ;-

George Henry & Vera Bage (nee Arundell).

For more information on this family follow these links ....

George Henry (1894 - 1967) & Vera Isabel Taylor Bage (nee Arundell, 1891 - 1970)
